After serving as a legendary music venue for more than 30 years -– presenting everything from Pearl Jam, Rage Against The Machine and Soundgarden to Robbie Williams’ first solo performance on a Danish stage – Copenhagen’s Pumpehuset was reopened in September 2011.

The house, heavily renovated to offer new technology, and improved acoustics and audience facilities, now offers two rooms; a 600 capacity hall and a smaller 300 capacity club. But, according to CEO Ronnie Hansen, the most striking feature about the venue since its makeover isn’t its physical appearance… Pumpehuset is part-owned by Nordisk Film Biografer, a division of the Egmont group – the largest entertainment company in Scandinavia. And, unlike many other venues of a similar size, is operated almost entirely on a commercial basis. “Pumpehuset is a cooperation between cultural entrepreneurs with economic insights and big business managers with cultural ambitions,” explains Ronnie, a special guest speaker at Nordic Venue Forum this June.

“The business is a joint-venture between myself, Kristoffer Buck Bramsen and Nordisk Film Biografer.” The partners are terming the model a ‘cultural-commercial partnership’; a unique collaboration that is the first of its kind in Denmark. “In Denmark,” continues Ronnie, “and also other parts of Scandinavia, smaller cultural venues like ours are usually highly subsidised by the government. But for how long?” “While all of our competitors scream for more funding, we believe that arts and cultural venues can be run profitably, on a 100% commercial basis.

” At Nordic Venue Forum 2012, Ronnie will be joined by Frederik Juul, CEO of Nordisk Film Live, to offer economic insights and key learnings from Pumpehuset’s first year of operations; and an appraisal of how the cultural-commercial partnership model is working in practice. “A lot of people think that Nordisk Film’s involvement is philanthropic, but it could not be further from the truth. Together, we are hoping to disprove this crazy long-standing belief that venues like ours are not commercially viable.” “And we look forward to sharing our story at the Forum.”

Join Frederik, Ronnie and the region’s leading venue executives at Nordic Venue Forum in Oslo this June, for two days of discussions, site visits and peer-to-peer networking that will change your venue business forever!
ABOUT THE SPEAKERS: Ronnie Hansen, 28, is the youngest CEO in the Egmont Group. Previously, he served as Head of Commercial Activities at top Copenhagen venue VEGA, and has also had experience with independent concert promotion with a roster including Aphex Twin, Diplo, Skream and Benga and the likes. Ronnie has a background from Copenhagen Business School and The Royal Guards. Frederik Juul is newly appointed CEO of Nordisk Film Live; a completely new division within Nordisk Film, and their first foray into enter the live entertainment business. Frederik’s first act was to open Pumpehuset and recently Denmark’s biggest theatre and musical production has been presented – and will open in November, 2012. Frederik is a former CEO of Sandrew Metronome Denmark and has hold managing positions in Danish advertising.

The conference schedule for Nordic Venue Forum 2012 has today been unveiled – offering an overview of the themes, topics and timings at the region’s leading dedicated venue meeting.

Following the success of the 2010 and 2011 events (held in Stockholm and Copenhagen respectively), Nordic Venue Forum 2012 takes place in Oslo, Norway, on 19-20 June 2012.

Last month, organisers Xperiology announced that the programme would, for the first time, feature dedicated parallel conference tracks for Sports/Entertainment and Arts/Culture themes… thereby offering more speakers, more focus and more knowledge-exchange at the Forum’s 2012 edition.

But now, the full Conference Overview has been unveiled; further detailing the discussions, workshops and networking events on offer to delegates in June.

“We are delighted to present further information on the programme for NVF12,” commented Ian Nuttall, co-founder and chair of the Nordic Venue Forum.

“We have once again designed the programme to specifically address issues of venue development, and operation for Sports, Performance, Arts, Culture and Entertainment venues in the Nordic region.

“Offering parallel programme tracks will allow us to really explore, in depth, some of the key concerns within each sector.

Nuttall continued; “In the coming weeks, we’ll be announcing our line-up of regional leaders and international expert speakers as the join the programme for the Forum.

“And we look forward to the region’s leading SPACE venues joining the debate, too!”

The international conference programme of Nordic Venue Forum is designed to address the specific issues of venue development and operation for Sports, Performance, Arts, Culture and Entertainment venues throughout the Nordic region.

However, with attendance at the Forum increasing year on year, organisers Xperiology have announced that the programme for the 2012 edition will feature split conference streams, to focus content on Sports/Entertainment and Arts/Culture themes.

Explains conference director Angelina Tennino: “We had such a wide range of venues represented at our 2011 meeting that we felt it necessary to offer a more bespoke conference programme for our 2012 edition.

“The topics that will be addressed at Nordic Venue Forum – driving revenues, diversifying content, growing audiences and delivering compelling visitor experiences – are key issues that will affect all venues in the region.

“But, by offering two dedicated conference streams, we can ensure that we concentrate discussion on the specific experiences, challenges and best-practice within each sector: and offer our guests more focussed solutions to apply to their venue businesses.”

The full programme and speaking line-up for Nordic Venue Forum 2012 will be unveiled soon.

More than 120 venue leaders from across the Nordic region (and beyond) gathered in Copenhagen for the 2011 meeting of the Nordic Venue Forum.

Under the themes of “Transforming Venues into Attractions and Fans into Customers”, last year’s forum explored ways to grow the event calendar, raise revenues and reach into new audience segments.

Over 25 speakers were included in the conference roster, while delegates also had the chance to not only ‘talk the talk’ but also ‘walk the walk’; with hosted visits to both Danish Radio’s stunning Koncerthusert (the world’s most expensive concert venue which has even hosted boxing!) and DGI-Byen, the award-winning sports, leisure and conference destination in the heart of Copenhagen.

Nordic Venue Forum 2011 took place hosted at the Crowne Plaza Copenhagen Towers – dubbed the ‘greenest hotel in the world’ – a short hop from the city’s international airport.

The 2011 meeting coincided with the City of Copenhagen releasing a tender for the operator of a new multi-purpose arena and the Forum included an insightful debate into the future design, funding and operation of the proposed Copenhagen Multi-arena.
